Students in this class will be introduced to the basic principles of flight such as control surfaces and systems of an airplane, airport logistics, aeronautical chart reading, the effect of weather elements on flight, and weather map reading. Students will build models and develop flight plans. The history, building and launching of rockets, as well as solar system studies will be included. Students will learn to fly computer flight simulators and will participate in field trips to Eglin, and NAS Pensacola. The students will also go flying with Mr. Jones at Sky Ranch Airpark.

Beginning Band
This course is open to students who have had no previous experience in instrumental music. The purpose of this course is to provide students with instruction in the development of beginning level skills on wind and percussion instruments.
Prerequisite: Approved instrument and method book.
Concert Band
The purpose of this course is to provide students with opportunities to develop musical skills in band and in instrumental ensembles. Marching band is required. Performances are mandatory and are a part of the overall grade in this class.
Prerequisite: Band 1
Symphonic Band
This course is open to students who demonstrate the ability to perform on an advanced level. The purpose of this course is to provide students with opportunities to develop musical skills in band and instrumental ensembles. Marching band is required. This course is designed to be an additional physical education elective for students also taking Comp. Physical Education 2 or 3. This course will enable students to develop competence in skills related to body management, apply this knowledge and skill in games, sports, dance, and individual activities, and improve health-related fitness with the aid of nutrition based discussions and activities.

Beginning Chorus
Beginning chorus is a year long, fully graded course for students who like to sing or who wish to learn to sing. Students will study music theory, vocal technique, and sight-reading. Students will be required to sing in both large and small groups and may be asked to sing solos at the discretion of the director. Students will concentrate on learning harmony and part-singing. All students will participate in several concerts throughout the year. Performances are mandatory and are a part of the overall grade in this class.

Concert chorus is a performing group that continues the skills learned in beginning chorus. Students will study music theory, vocal technique, and sight reading. Students will sing a variety of styles such as folk, pop, country, or light classical. Students will be required to sing in both large and small groups and may be asked to sing solos at the discretion of the director. Students will concentrate on learning harmony and part-singing. All students will participate in several concerts throughout the year. Performances are mandatory and are a part of the overall grade in this class.
Select Chorus
Select chorus is an advanced choral group that sings a variety of music from different styles and cultures. Through performance, these students further develop their knowledge of the elements of music, proper vocal technique, and music reading skills. Students will sing a variety of styles such as folk, pop, country, or light classical. Students will be required to sing in both large and small groups and may be asked to sing solos at the discretion of the director. Students will concentrate on learning harmony and part-singing. All participants will perform a minimum of four times a year (Fall Concert, Winter Concert, Spring Concert, and Fine Arts Festival). There are also many opportunities for students to attend other musical events such as: Solo/Ensemble Contest, District Choral MPA, All-County Chorus and Florida All-State Chorus. Performances are mandatory and are a part of the overall grade in this class. Special attire may be required for performances.

Construction Technology

Students will receive basic training necessary for entry into the Construction program at Crestview High School. The year will begin with intensive shop and construction safety standards and procedures. Students will proceed with basic construction math skills which include addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, basic geometry as applied to common shapes and forms, and the metric system using practical examples. Each student is assigned various wooden projects to construct which require the basic understanding of simple drawings, and step-by-step instructions. Advanced students will be trained and tested on the use of basic power tools such as power sanders, saws, finish nailers, air tools, and hand tools used in the industry. All students will receive familiarization training with basic blueprint terms, components, symbols and scale identification. During second semester, students will use their basic blueprint reading skills to build a model bridge, a rubber band powered airplane, and a mouse trap car. The best will earn an opportunity to compete at the Industry Design Engineering and Students (IDEAS) competition. Our second and third year students will study structural engineering by building model houses and other structures by using blueprints, floor framing, wall layout, roof framing and finish with roof applications.

Topics covered during the year include: identification of culinary careers and job opportunities, job and employability skills, safe and sanitary work procedures, use and care of tools and equipment, recipe measurement, principles of nutrition, and preparation of food items.

Subjects covered during the year include nutrition, healthy bodies and exercise, kitchen knowledge, color and design in clothing, and proper care of clothing. Projects will include hands-on food preparation in class, cooking at home, and an in-class sewing project.

Students are challenged beyond the scope of HORSE classes’ regular assignments for each novel. Further, students research a topic of choice that relates to a subject that is introduced in each novel. Students then prepare and present their findings using technology: Power Point presentation, art, music, etc. that furthers interest among the class and provides opportunities for students to express themselves in a public speaking forum and provides an avenue for them to express their individual talents. Students learn effective pair, group and individual skills in communication, research and presentation. Learning excursions are planned that further the study of a novel or develop team work. Intro to Computers
This course is for students who have not had previous computer courses. Topics include keyboarding skills, Internet and Computing Fundamentals, Internet research, the Windows 7 Operating System, the Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Windows Movie Maker and a variety of other programs.
Intro to Information Technology (High School Credit)
This course is for 7th or 8th grade students who have taken the Introduction to Computers course. The focus of the course is the Internet and Computing Core Certification in the areas of: Computer Fundamentals, Key Applications and Living Online. There is also an in-depth study of the Office Suite, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Teacher approval required.
Web Design I (High school Credit)
This course is for 8th grade students who have taken the Introduction to Computers and Computer Applications courses. The course covers the basics of Web Design and includes the use of the programs Dreamweaver, Flash, and Fireworks. Students also learn HTML and CSS Coding.

Intensive Reading

This course is for students who scored below grade level on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT Level 1 or 2). Read 180 and/or additional materials will be used in this class. Intensive reading provides direct instruction, guided practice and application of skills in multiple contexts, to build essential reading skills. The focus is on developing the skills and strategies needed to become proficient readers. Goals for students in this class will be to score on grade level or make significant gains from the previous year’s scores; to increase independence as readers by transferring skills learned in this class to other academic classes; and to enjoy reading and become lifelong readers.

Keyboarding - Piano

Keyboarding 1
Piano Lab is a one year course for students in grades 6 - 8. Using the piano in this full year class, students will learn the basics of music notation, rhythm, melody and harmony.
Students progress through instruction utilizing beginning piano books and supplementary materials. Access to a piano/keyboard outside the class is helpful but not necessary.
Keyboarding 2
The purpose of this course is to gain proficiency at the keyboard through the study of music reading, composition/arranging, history, literature, and piano technique.
Students will develop interpretative skills based upon directed study of keyboard literature. In addition to developing a strong technical foundation, students will be encouraged to acquire solo and ensemble performance skills and healthy practice habits.

Morning Show

Students will use computer-based digital equipment to produce videos and audio recordings. Students will learn pre-production planning, production methods, and post-production editing on the computer. Students in this class will also have the opportunity to produce a daily TV news show for the school’s closed circuit TV. The class will make videos of school events, provide audio mixing, tech support and make audio recordings.

SSTRIDE

This is an outreach program sponsored by FSU known as SSTRIDE. The purpose of this class is to provide information regarding careers in the Health sciences. The content includes but is not limited to various career paths, promoting good health and a in depth study of the structure and function of certain human body systems, an introduction to medical ethics, characteristics of health care workers and community health agencies.
Prerepuisite requirments:Strong interest in science or health related profession and a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Students are selected through an interview process. Two letters of recommendation (one from a science teacher and one from a Guidance Counselor) are required. Applicants should have an interest in attending FSU and have parental commitment to remain in the program through high school.

Journalism(Elective)
The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop intermediate-level skills in the production of print or electronic journalistic media, which includes writing for community newspapers and the production of the SRMS Yearbook. The content includes, but is not limited to the following: history of journalism and legal issues, gathering and organizational techniques, writing and editing techniques, online production, communication with public, proper interview and phone technique, analysis and evaluation of media, and varied print and electronic media.
Special Note: Hands-on activities are integral to this course. This course requires students to participate in activities beyond the school day to sell ads and meet deadlines. Application, teacher recommendation and interview are required for placement into the class. FCAT Reading Level 3 or above preferred. |
