On February 15, 2010, Shoal River lost a beloved family member, Attendance Secretary Annelise Adams. To honor the memory of our friend, we hosted the Annelise's Wild Mustang 5K Run/Walk on April 24, 2010. This event was a fundraiser to benefit groups, clubs and organizations at Shoal River. We know Annelise would have been the first one to sign up!
Annelise was an avid walker and could be seen counting her steps every afternoon in the halls of the school. If you were lucky enough to walk with her, you had better be fast because her strides were long and quick! And, you had also better be ready to laugh and have fun along the way.
Annelise was also a horse lover and at one time three horses made their home in her barn. She spent countless hours caring for her own herd of "Wild Mustangs" and loved watching her children Amy and AJ ride.
The first graduating class of Shoal River 8th graders adopted the Annelise Adams Butterfly Garden as the recipient of their Penny Project. For the project, students started collecting 1.5 million pennies to represent the children killed during the Holocaust. The 8th grade students selected the Butterfly Garden to receive the funds collected after reading the poem, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," which was written by a Polish child who lived in the ghetto during the Holocaust.
The butterfly is an important symbol of life and renewal. Along with natural science and biological topics, the Butterfly Garden will be used each year in conjunction with the 8th grade unit on the Holocaust.
