Shoal River Registration Information:
Registration Packets for current 5th graders are going home the week of February 6-10. Packets are due by next Wednesday, February 15.
Registration Packets for current 6th and 7th graders will go out on Monday, March 5.
The Showcase of Excellence will be on April 3rd from 5:30 to 7:00. This will provide an opportunity for students that will be attending Shoal River next year to get registration and course information.


PTO and SAC Meetings:
The next PTO meeting will be on Tuesday, February 21st @ 5:00 PM in the Media Center. The next SAC meeting will be on Tuesday, February 21st @ 6:00 PM in the Media Center. All parents are invited to attend.


Wild Mustang Run
The 3rd annual Wild Mustang 5k Run will be held on Saturday, February 25 at 9:00 AM. The entry fee is $20 per person and t-shirts are guaranteed to the first 100 participants. Come join us and support Shoal River programs.

Greetings, Mustang Parents! Welcome back to a brand new year.
Second semester is an opportunity for a new or fresh start for your students.  Bringing first semester to a close, you may expect your child’s report card on Wednesday, January 25th.
Tutoring is available on Wednesdays from 3-5pm for students with a D or F in a core subject.  Transportation is NOT provided.  Please make certain to arrange transportation promptly at 5pm.  Student non-instructional assistance is available in the Media Center on Tu and Th from 3-4:45.
8th grade students and parents please plan to meet with Crestview High in the CHS auditorium from 6-7pm on Thursday, January 26th DATE CHANGED  CHS will provide information regarding next year’s high school registration.  On Tuesday, January 31st, high school counselors will be at Shoal River in 8th grade history classes for actual registration.  Students should return the registration forms immediately to avoid counselors registering for you.
6th and 7th grade students will begin registering in mid February.  We will host an informational parent night on Thursday, Feb. 16th.

Last chance for yearbook!This is the LAST CHANCE to order a Mustang Round Up  Yearbook for this year (Volume 3).  Yearbooks will be delivered in May, BUT students CANNOT WAIT until then to order one because the yearbook staff has to order them from the publisher the 31st day of January.  That is the LAST day to order a yearbook.  Students may make payments if necessary.  Yearbooks are $50. If purchased online or at school.  The yearbook is hardcover, full color and over 100 pages.

Dance Team Toy Drive:Toys for St. Jude
The STARZ Dance Team held a toy drive to collect toys for the St. Jude Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Mrs. Manchester and Mr. Whiddon (right) pose with some of the toys donated by Shoal River Students.
Members of the Dance Team, Ashlee Pratt, Lauren Steele, and Naja McCutchen - along with Mrs. Manchester and Mrs. Miller - personally delivered the toys.
Mr. Chavers and his Elves (below) worked hard in the Toy Shop making a toy rocker and airplane to deliver.

FCS Wins Prize in Parade:
The Fellowship of Christian Students entered a float in the Crestview Christmas Parade, winning second place in the Civic/School/Youth Group Division.


 

Fisher House Donation
Fisher House Donation:

Shoal River Students donated $340 in quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies during the November 11th Veteran's Day Ceremony at school. The theme of the collection centered around donating change to help change the lives of warriors wounded in battle.


Cross Country Finishes Season Strong:
state cross countryThe Shoal River Cross Country Team had 3 runners to finish in the Top Ten in the Okaloosa County Middle School 2 mile XC Meet which includes 11 teams. 
8th graders Danny Born and Allison Ammons finished in 7th place overall with times of 12:34 and 13:54, respectively.  7th grader Jaylah Lawson finished 10th place overall with a time of 13:59.    These times qualified them for the State Meet in Lakeland, Fl. 
Allison Ammons (right) went to the State Meet and finished 17th place among 131 of the top runners in the state. Her time for the 3K was 12:29.


 

Book Talk
Martha LaGuardia-Kotite told the story behind the writing of the celebrated book
“So Others May Live” to students in Mrs. Donfro's classes. She then spoke with students about these heroic Veterans and signed books. A copy is available for check out in the Media Center.

Joyce HORSE ClassAnd the winner is...
Mr. Joyce and his HORSE class were the first to finish the school-wide book Schooled. Awesome!


PTO Box Tops:
Beginning in November, PTO will begin sponsoring Box Tops for education. Students can drop off box tops in the front office. Box Tops need to be in a clear baggie with the student's name, grade, HORSE teacher and the # of tops in the bag. At the end of the month, one student per grade level that has turned in the most Box Tops will win a free fast food lunch.

PTO Coke Cap Codes:
Coke cap codes earn out school free items! PTO needs everyone to start saving your coke caps and place them in the containers in the lunchroom. You can drop in caps from all Coke products, including Minute Maid, Powerade and Dasani.


Minority Council:
MC meets the first and third Wednesday of every month from 2:50 to 3:50 PM in room 801. Please make arrangements for a ride home once the meeting is over. See Ms. Simmons if you have any questions.


Academic Team Information:
The Academic Team will practice on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 7:45 AM in Mr. Brown's room. If you are interested in trying out, please see Mr. Brown ASAP.

Students must have a ride home. All are welcome.


Fantastic Four Drawing Contest:
7th Graders - Our theme this year centers around the FANTASTIC FOUR, one for each nine weeks—the first is LAW, then LAND, then LOST in space, then LIFE.  We challenge you to DRAW a super hero for each one of the Fantastic Four Themes.  Turn in your entries on plain white paper to either Mrs. Barrow, Mrs. Wicker or Ms. Buis. 


Schooled Book Drop

Shoal River students took time out of their day to meet some of the characters from the book Schooled by Gordon Korman. All HORSE classes will read the book the first 9 weeks.


 

The Beach
The 6th Grade Survival Camp was a huge success! Students were able to get a jump start on the year by practicing their locker combinations, getting their PE uniforms, learning about the sports requirements, walking their class schedule, going over the Shoal River website and meeting PTO parents. And, they could stop and take a break at "The Beach" every once in a while and admire the view!

On-Line School Payments:

We are pleased to be able to offer an additional method of payment for your student's expenditures. Okaloosa Schools are now able to accept payments using Visa credit cards, Visa debit/check cards, MasterCard credit cards, and MasterCard debit/check cards through On-Line School Payments, which may be accessed through our school web site. In order to offer this service, the company charges a convenience fee of 3.50%. For example, if you are making a $10.00 payment, your convenience fee would be $0.35. If you do not wish to incur a convenience fee, you may continue making check and/or cash payments at your school. http://osp.osmsinc.com/okaloosa


Schedule Changes:
With the Class Size Amendment being placed at the per class level, we cannot have more than 22 in any core class any period. Therefore, schedule changes will be difficult, if not impossible, to do once the master schedule is set.


PE Uniforms on Sale:
Uniforms are a gray SRMS shirt and your choice of blue or red shorts.


Dress Code Guidelines to Follow:
- The 3 X 5 Index Card Rule: Shirt straps must be at least 3” in width on the shoulders.
- Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than 5” above the knee.
- No holes or rips in jeans or shorts. Duct tape may not be used to cover rips and tears. Students will be sent home for a change of clothes before returning to class.
- Pants may not sag. “Twine suspenders” are issued for repeat offenders.
- Stomachs must be covered when arms are raised above the head.
- Undergarments or cleavage should not show at anytime.
- Hair color must be naturally occurring. (Ex: NO red, blue, pink, purple, green, etc)
- No Mohawks or other visually distracting haircuts which create a disturbance to the learning environment.
Remember these tips while “back to school” shopping this fall. In doing so, you will prepare yourself for a great year as you DRESS FOR SUCCESS
